Open forums focus on issues important to the association and the profession. They can be one of the most dynamic parts of MLA’s annual meeting, sparking great conversations that give everyone in the room food for thought. This year’s lineup includes MLA’s proposed bylaws changes, MLA international initiatives, and public access to government-funded research. We hope you’ll participate and add your voice to the dialogue on these important topics!
Discussion of Proposed Bylaws Amendments

Join us for a discussion of proposed MLA Bylaws and Special Rules of Order modifications intended to support a more nimble and responsive governance structure to meet the quickly changing needs of our members and the health sciences library environment. MLA members will vote on proposed changes at the business meeting on Tuesday, May 17, 9:00 a.m.–10:25 a.m.

Join us for a two-part discussion of MLA’s international initiatives:
- Discover what you can do to expand access to research in the developing world by applying for a new MLA HINARI/Research4Life Grant.
- Weigh in on MLA’s international strategy.
We invite our members and international attendees to participate and share with us their perspective on international collaboration.
Public Access to Government-Funded Research Publications
Room: 203B
Invited speakers Jerry Sheehan and Katie Funk share the latest information about several new public access policies developed by federal agencies.
This event will provide an update on US departments and agencies with completed public access plans. These plans were in compliance with the February 2013 Office of Science and Technology policy memorandum calling for increased public access to the results of federally funded scientific research.
Sheehan and Funk will address the interagency perspective, the PubMed Central perspective, implementation, and the timeline. Forum attendees will have a better understanding of the librarian’s role in supporting compliance and helping meet the needs of authors, funders, and the public.
