Do You Want to Be a Library Director? (What Does a Director Do, Anyway?)

Our popular continuing education course, “Do You Want to Be a Library Director? Knowledge, Skills, and Career Paths for Library Leaders,” will help you answer these questions, plan your career, and connect with current and future leaders and directors (including M.J. Tooey, AHIP, FMLA, Health Sciences and Human Services Library, University of Maryland–Baltimore, and Gabriel Rios, Ruth Lilly Medical Library, Indiana University–Indianapolis, with whom I am teaching this course). No particular knowledge or experience is needed to benefit from our course, just a desire to explore your leadership potential and possible leadership career paths.

Many librarians have the potential to direct a library, but few carefully consider this career move, plan for it, or take advantage of opportunities. Our course will help you to get an accurate picture of what academic health center and hospital library directors actually do. You will explore your readiness and interest in following a library director career path through exercises in self-awareness and self-assessment.

Academic health center and hospital library directors of the baby boom generation will be retiring in the coming years. Now is the time to begin planning to replace one of them!

Visit Do You Want to Be a Library Director? Knowledge, Skills, and Career Paths for Library Leaders to learn more and MLANET to register.

MLA continuing education courses are powerful and rewarding learning experiences! Of the participants who evaluated MLA ’17 courses, 97% found their courses engaging and would recommend them to colleagues. The percentage who rated themselves competent or better in their course area nearly tripled, from 22% to 59%.
