InSight Initiative: Summit 2

The September 27–28, 2018, summit brings together MLA leaders and select participating organizations to engage in high-level, high-value dialogue on issues of common interest that impact the health information profession. Theme: Meeting the Evolving Information Needs of Library Stakeholders

The program format includes a mix of keynote speeches, themed panel discussions, and small group problem-solving exercises. The summit also employs a number of techniques to facilitate networking and encourage future relationships.

The two keynote speeches will feature different sides of the same coin. Both speakers address the summit’s theme of Meeting the Evolving Information Needs of Library Stakeholders, one from a quantitative aspect and the other from a qualitative perspective:

• Tracy Gardner is a consultant at Renew Publishing Consultants, which has been conducting online surveys of the information habits of professionals in all disciplines since 2005. Its fifth survey, issued in 2018, elicited responses from more that 11,000 professionals from all over the world. Gardner will focus on the information habits of North American health care professionals from the 2018 survey, a statistically valid segment, and will contrast that data with other relevant professional groups and demographics as well as spotting trends in the information habits of this cohort since 2005.
• Jeff D. Williams, AHIP, director of the NYU Health Sciences Library at New York University (NYU) Langone Health, has been acutely interested in the changing needs of library users for many years and will describe how the library has been adapting its services to respond to those changing needs.

The keynote speeches will be delivered back-to-back, followed by a Q&A session, featuring both speakers, with summit participants.

The panel on Friday morning will feature the personal experiences related by four different health care professionals on how, where, and on what devices they discover, access, and consume professional-level information. The chosen panelists will represent a good variety of both the types of health care professionals and age ranges (e.g., nurse manager, clinician, researcher, associated health professional, young professional [late-level student or resident]), so summit participants will receive varied testimony on the changing information needs of a nice cross-section of the users they are targeting.

The librarians on the InSight Initiative Summit 2 Program Committee are preparing a reading list representing a review of the recent literature documenting users’ changing information needs. Attendees will be given this list a couple of weeks before the summit and asked to read the articles so all attendees arrive at the summit with a similar baseline of knowledge of the summit theme and the related topics that the summit will explore.

Summit Participants

MLA plans balanced representation of librarian leaders and participating organizations. The committee estimates the second summit will convene fifteen to twenty librarians and fifteen to twenty participating organization representatives.

Librarian participants

Participating librarians:

• have professional knowledge, expertise, and interest in the summit theme;
• will commit to:
• attendance at the September 27–28, 2018, summit in Chicago (September 27, 2018, noon, to September 28, 2018, 3:00 p.m.);
• between three and five hours of preparatory work (pre-summit);
• active participation and contribution to the work of the summit; and
• up to ten hours of follow-up work (post-summit activities and products).

The InSight Initiative Task Force will select the participants by August 20, 2018 (MLA membership preferred but not required).

Cost and travel support for librarian participants

There is no registration fee for librarian participants. MLA will support the travel expenses of librarian participants (summit hotel and transportation) up to $800. This is made possible through the generous support of our Inaugural Sponsors for summits 1 and 2:

• Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries (AAHSL) with a $15,000 grant to support librarian participant travel expenses
• Elsevier with a $12,000 grant to support the zero-registration fee for librarian participants
