Hawaii-Pacific Chapter

  • Amount: $100
  • Eligibility: Available for two first-time applicants who are HPC-MLA and MLA members.
  • Description: In order to support the professional growth of its members, the Chapter offers one-time subsidies to partially offset application fees for Academy of Health Information Professionals (AHIP) membership.

Medical Library Group of Southern California and Arizona (MLGSCA)

Lifetime Achievement Award

  • Amount: No dollars assigned
  • Eligibility: Member of MLGSCA for at least five years and is a current member ending a distinguished career in health sciences librarianship.
  • Description: To honor the significant lifetime achievements of a MLGSCA member who has made lasting contributions to the profession of health science librarianship beyond the scope of the local chapter.

Louise Darling MLGSCA Achievement Award

  • Amount: $500.00
  • Eligibility: Membership in MLGSCA at the time of election and be a member for a minimum of two years
  • Description: To honor significant contributions to health sciences librarianship, as well as to the Medical Library Group of Southern California and Arizona.

MLGSCA Library Staff Excellence Award

  • Amount: $250.00
  • Eligibility: Library staff without a masters degree (membership not listed as a criteria)
  • Description: To honor an outstanding library paraprofessional in a health sciences library and to recognize the critical role and important contributions library paraprofessionals make to the development and evolution of modern health sciences libraries and librarianship.

Professional Development Award

  • Amount: Awards range from $100 - $500
  • Eligibility: Regular member of MLGSCA; Hold a graduate degree in library/information science; Be a practicing medical librarian with at least two years of professional experience; Not have received this award in the past three years.
  • Description: To support professional development activities including attendance at classes, conferences and meetings.

Research Grant

  • Amount: $1000 has been set aside for the awards program for the July-June fiscal year with $500 being the maximum amount per award
  • Eligibility: All applicants must hold current membership in MLGSCA. Student members of MLGSCA will be required to identify a practicing medical librarian or a library school faculty member as a sponsor for their research project. Sponsors do not have to be members of MLGSCA. In exceptional cases, consideration may be given to outstanding research proposals submitted by individuals who do not meet these eligibility requirements
  • Description: To support research that focuses on topics and issues in health sciences librarianship.

Student Scholarship

  • Amount: One scholarship of $1500 is awarded annually
  • Eligibility: A member of MLGSCA, either as a regular paying member or via a free student membership, having met the criteria for a free student membership. A free student membership application may accompany the scholarship application.  Be enrolled in and actively attending an ALA-accredited master’s degree program such as MLS, MIS, MLIS. Be a citizen of or have permanent residence in the United States or Canada
  • Description: To provide support during a student's course of study. The scholarship funds can be used as desired by the recipient.

AHIP First Time Applicant Award

  • Amount: Reimbursement of current AHIP application fee
  • Eligibility: Current member of MLGSCA Chapter and of MLA (National) with AHIP membership awarded in past 12 months.
  • Description: To provide reimbursement for fees associated with obtaining initial AHIP membership

Mid-Atlantic Chapter (MAC)

MAC Award for Outstanding Health Sciences Library Paraprofessional

  • Amount: one-year MAC membership, and a cash award of $250
  • Eligibility: MAC member who is a paraprofessional
  • Description: to honor an outstanding library paraprofessional in a health sciences library and to recognize the critical role and important contributions library paraprofessionals make to the development and evolution of modern health sciences libraries and librarianship.

MAC Award for Professional Excellence by a Health Sciences Librarian

  • Amount: $250.00
  • Eligibility: MAC members who have been a member of the health sciences librarian community for more than ten years
  • Description: This award is presented to a MAC member for outstanding contributions in health sciences librarianship

MAC Award for Professional Excellence by a New Health Sciences Librarian

  • Amount: $250.00
  • Eligibility: MAC members who have been a member of the health sciences librarian community for ten or fewer years
  • Description: This award is presented to a MAC member for outstanding contributions in health sciences librarianship.

Marguerite Abel Service Recognition Award

  • Amount: $250.00
  • Eligibility: MAC member
  • Description: This award is given to a MAC member for exemplary service to the Chapter during the past year.

Research & Assessment Grants

  • Amount: $2000 in any one year with the potential for more funding with MAC Board approval.
  • Eligibility: Applicants must hold a graduate degree in library science and be practicing health science librarians and current member of MAC/MLA.
  • Description: For research projects that promote and stimulate excellence in the field of health science librarianship and health sciences librarianship.

MAC Scholar Program

  • Amount: not listed
  • Eligibility: A MAC member with 5 or less years of post-MLS experience.
  • Description: For new librarians to attend the 2018 MAC Annual Meeting.

MAC Student Vision

  • Amount: Recipients receive inclusive meeting registration, registration for the Welcome Reception, one night’s accommodation at the conference hotel (reimbursed), and meals that are provided as part of the conference program. The Student Vision Scholarship does not include travel expenses to the conference (airfare, mileage, or car rental), accommodations (hotel) beyond the one night awarded, or meals outside of conference programming.
  • Eligibility: The scholarship is available to students who are currently enrolled in an MLS program. They must live in or attend a program in the MAC region.
  • Description: Students attending the conference are invited to explore the benefits of health sciences librarianship through interaction, networking, and mentorship.

Midcontinental Chapter (MCMLA)

Bernice M. Hetzner Award for Excellence in Academic Health Science Librarianship

  • Amount: $350
  • Eligibility: Member of MCMLA and work in an academic health sciences library.
  • Description: This award recognizes an academic health sciences librarian who has achieved a high level of professional accomplishment. A framed certificate and travel stipend will be awarded.

Barbara McDowell Award for Excellence in Hospital Librarianship

  • Amount: $350
  • Eligibility: Member of MCMLA and work in a hospital library.
  • Description: This award honors a chapter member who has made an outstanding contribution to hospital librarianship. A framed certificate is awarded and a stipend to offset travel expenses to the MCMLA Annual Meeting.

Outstanding Achievement Award

  • Amount: $350
  • Eligibility: Membership in MCMLA for a minimum of five years
  • Description: This award honors a member for contributions to health sciences/hospital libraries, to the profession, goals, and objectives of the chapter. A plaque will be awarded and stipend to offset travel expenses  to attend the MCMLA annual meeting.

STARS Program

  • Amount: Three $20 gift certificates
  • Eligibility: MCMLA members
  • Description: This recognition program allows members to share what they've done throughout the year to go above and beyond their regular duties.

Professional Travel Scholarship

  • Amount: $500
  • Eligibility: MCMLA members
  • Description: This scholarship is to be used to help members with a financial need to attend the MCMLA Annual Meeting.  Preference is given to those applicants working in a rural area.

Midwest Chapter

Annual Meeting Grant

  • Amount: Each grant includes a free full conference registration and $500
  • Eligibility: Member of the Midwest Chapter/MLA. Not eligible for the Student Annual Meeting Grant (library school students) or the First-Time Attendee Grant (first-time attendees). Have not received a Midwest Chapter award supporting meeting attendance within the past three years.
  • Description: Supports the attendance of librarians and library staff at the Chapter’s Annual Meeting.

First-Time Attendee Annual Meeting Grant

  • Amount: Each grant includes a free full conference registration and $500
  • Eligibility: Member of the Midwest Chapter/MLA. A resident of one of the following nine states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Ohio, or Wisconsin. Must have a master’s degree in library/information science. Never attended a Midwest Chapter Annual Meeting.
  • Description: Supports the attendance of librarians and library staff at the Chapter’s Annual Meeting.

Student Annual Meeting Grant

  • Amount: Each grant includes a free full conference registration and $500
  • Eligibility: Member of the Midwest Chapter/MLA. Enrolled in an ALA-accredited master’s program in library science/information studies at the time of the annual meeting. A resident of one of the following nine states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Ohio, or Wisconsin.

Distinguished Librarian of the Year Award

Jean Williams Sayre Innovation Award

  • Amount: $500 plus a plaque
  • Eligibility: Nominees can be an individual, a group of individuals, a library, an institution, or an organization. An individual nominee must be a member of the Midwest Chapter. Group, library, institutional, or organizational nominees must include at least one person who is a member of the Midwest Chapter. Library, institutional, or organizational nominees must be located in one of the following nine states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, North Dakota, Ohio or Wisconsin.
  • Description: Recognizes individuals, groups, libraries, or organizations for their creative approaches to the delivery and management of health information.

New York-New Jersey Chapter (NY-NJ)

  • Eligibility: All applicants must hold a graduate degree in library science. All applicants must be practicing medical librarians with at least one year of professional experience. All applicants must be members of the NY/NJ Chapter of MLA.
  • Description: The NY/NJ Chapter of the Medical Library Association provides modest support for research projects. The purpose of these grants is to provide members with the opportunity to promote excellence in the field of health science librarianship and the information sciences. Grants may be as large as $1000, and more than one grant may be offered in a year.

NAHSL Annual Meeting Scholarship

New members of NAHSL who join at mid-year (due to change of job, moving into the area, etc.) will be eligible for award opportunities. Jay Daly Technology Grant

  • Amount: A maximum of $1000 may be awarded per project per year.
  • Eligibility: Applicant must be a current member of NAHSL (membership will be verified by Membership Chair). Technology grants are available for: new or expanded technology-related projects and necessary training; hardware/software as part of a new or expanded service; site visits to assess services at another location, including related travel expenses; promotion of a new or expanded technology service.
  • Description: To assist award recipients to acquire and implement new technologies in their institutions, ultimately improving their users' access to health information.

MLA Annual Meeting Scholarship

Northern California and Nevada Medical Library Group (NCNMLG)

NCNMLG Professional Development Grant

  • Amount: $4,000 per year, $2,000 in the spring and $2,000 in the fall. There is a limit of $1,000 on each individual award
  • Eligibility: Applicants must be a regular member of NCNMLG
  • Description: to support NCNMLG members’ professional development activities including attendance at classes, conferences and meetings and to provide NCNMLG members with the opportunity to increase their competence in the theoretical, administrative and/or technical aspects of librarianship and information management.

Ysabel Bertolucci Award for Professional Excellence

  • Eligibility: Candidate has demonstrated sustained and excellent achievement and made significant contributions towards the advancement of health sciences librarianship. Candidate has demonstrated distinguished service in health sciences librarianship in the areas of mentoring and service to the profession, institution, and/or community. Candidate is a member (active or emeritus) of NCNMLG at the time of nomination and has been an active contributor to NCNMLG, which could include serving on committees, holding elected positions, and participating in Joint Meeting planning

Locke Morrisey Professional Development Grant for Spectrum Scholars

  • NCNMLG sponsors one American Library Association Spectrum Scholar each year. NCNMLG Spectrum Scholars are invited to shadow NCNMLG members at regional universities, hospitals and medical centers. The Locke Morrisey Professional Development Grant for Spectrum Scholars provides funding for travel, meals, and accommodations during their visits.

Pacific Northwest Chapter of MLA (PNC)

AHIP First-Timer Award

Grant Program for Professional Development

Beatrice Davis Education Award

  • Eligibility: Individuals who are enrolled in an ALA accredited masters program in Library and Information Sciences and are interested in health science librarianship.

Randy Brenner Memorial Consumer Health Award

South Central Chapter (SCC)

AHIP First-Time Applicant Award

  • Eligibility: To qualify, applicants must be members of both SCC and MLA and a first-time applicant for AHIP membership at any level, and they must have submitted complete AHIP documentation to MLA and received notification that AHIP membership was successfully awarded. Mayo Drake Student Scholarship Award

  • Amount: This scholarship includes a free student registration, a single ticket to the SCC business luncheon, a complimentary CE (subject to availability), and a $1000 award for travel/lodging expenses.

William D. Postell, Sr. Professional Development Award

  • Amount: Varies - A total of $4000.00 will be available to fund SCC/MLA members’ continuing education experiences this year
  • Eligibility: To qualify, applicants must be SCC members with an MLS (or equivalent) and work in a professional position. Applicants who have received an award within the last 3 years are ineligible.
  • Description: This award partially or completely covers the registration fees and travel-related expenses for an SCC/MLA member to attend a continuing education course (CE) or workshop

Southern Chapter 

AHIP Scholarship

  • Amount: Southern Chapter will reimburse the AHIP application fee.
  • Eligibility: Applicants must be current Southern Chapter members, submit a successful and accepted AHIP application no more than 6 months prior to a request for reimbursement, and individually cover the cost of AHIP application fees without employer reimbursement.
  • Description: To support members in their professional development, Southern Chapter will reimburse the AHIP application fee at the MLA member rate for successful first-time applicants and those renewing at a higher level. Southern Chapter will fund up to five awards per calendar year on a first-come, first-served basis until funds are exhausted.

Academic Librarian of the Year Award

  • Amount: $250
  • Eligibility: member of both SC/MLA and MLA and in “mid-career” at the time of the award, defined as someone working at least 5 and not more than 15 years in an academic health sciences library; the nominee may not be a library director. The nominee must have worked in an academic health sciences library for each of the last 5 years immediately preceding the nomination, and must be an academic health sciences librarian at the time of the award.  The nominee must show potential for leadership and continuing excellence at mid-career in the area of academic health sciences librarianship.
  • Description: May be made for outstanding regional, national or international contributions to academic health sciences librarianship as demonstrated by excellence in performance (leadership), publications, research, service, or a combination of these 4 elements.

First Time Attendee Scholarship (Annual Meeting Scholarship Award)

  • Amount: up to $1000
  • Eligibility: SC/MLA member in good standing (non-student)
  • Description: is designed to pay for registration, travel, accommodation, meals, and one (1) CE course at the SC/MLA annual meeting

Hospital Librarian of the Year Award

  • Amount: $250
  • Eligibility: Nominee must be a member of SC/MLA, hospital librarians at the time of the award and must have worked in a hospital library for at least 3 years immediately preceding the award.  The nomination may be made for notable contributions to hospital librarianship in the areas of service, administration, advocacy, technology, leadership, instruction, presenting, research, or publishing.
  • Description: to recognize a hospital librarian who has made significant contributions to the profession including overall distinction, leadership in hospital library administration or service, production of a definitive publication related to hospital librarianship, teaching, research, or advocacy, OR the development or application of innovative technology to hospital librarianship

Jocelyn Rankin Memorial Scholarship

  • Amount: The amount awarded, not to exceed $500.00, can be used to defray expenses necessary for the fulfillment of the course (tuition, travel, etc.).
  • Eligibility: Applicants must be current, non-student Southern Chapter members who want to attend a research-related continuing education course or workshop
  • Description: assists Southern Chapter members in gaining needed skills and knowledge to perform, implement, and promote research projects within their institutions, communities, and across the field of medical librarianship.

Library & Information Science (LIS) Student Award

  • Amount: $250
  • Eligibility: Applicants must be currently enrolled in an ALA-accredited library school within the region and be a current member of SC/MLA
  • Description: is designed to encourage LIS students to attend the annual SC/MLA meeting by helping to offset registration and travel costs. 

Martha C. Watkins Memorial Scholarship

  • Amount: amount awarded will not exceed $500.00, and can be used to defray any expenses necessary for the fulfillment of the course (tuition, travel, etc).
  • Eligibility: Applicants must be current Southern Chapter members, who work in a hospital library and who want to take a course or workshop at the Southern Chapter annual meeting.
  • Description: To help Southern Chapter members gain skills and knowledge needed to improve their roles in providing optimum patient care and to enhance the role of hospital librarians in maintaining their cutting-edge managerial skills in the face of changing social forces which affect hospitals.

Research Grant

  • Amount: Grants may be used to support all or part of the costs of a study, up to a maximum of $1000. SC/MLA may award more than one grant in a year for a maximum of $1000 in any one year.
  • Eligibility: Current member of SC/MLA
  • Description: for research projects in order to promote and stimulate excellence in the field of health science librarianship and the information sciences.

T. Mark Hodges Outstanding Service Award

  • Amount: $250
  • Eligibility: Nominees must have been a member of the Southern Chapter and the Medical Library Association for at least 10 years.
  • Description: to recognize a chapter member whose service to the chapter and profession have been exceptional and of lasting importance.

Upstate New York and Ontario Chapter (UNYOC)

Katy Nesbit Service Award

  • Amount: paid registration to the next Annual Meeting.
  • Eligibility: UNYOC member
  • Description: recognizes a UNYOC member for exemplary service to the Chapter.

UNYOC Fellows

  • Amount: no monetary award but Fellows are exempt from dues
  • Eligibility: Regular or Emeritus members of UNYOC/MLA for at least the prior 10 consecutive years and passed the mid-point of their career with significant and continuous contributions to UNYOC and/or to the profession of health sciences librarianship.
  • Description: Regular or Emeritus members of UNYOC who have made significant contributions to the chapter or to health sciences librarianship. Fellows are exempt from dues and have all the rights and privileges of Regular Members.

Professional Development Award

  • Amount: $500. One such award will be given per UNYOC membership year (Jan.-Dec.).
  • Eligibility: Current member of UNYOC and have a graduate degree in library/information science or information systems to apply. 
  • Description: The Professional Development Award is intended to provide an opportunity for a librarian/information specialist to pursue a continuing education/professional development opportunity in the area of health sciences librarianship

Ursula H. Poland Scholarship Award

  • Amount: Two scholarship awards in the amount of $500.00 (There will be one scholarship awarded to a Canadian applicant and one to a US applicant). Each awardee will also receive a one-year membership in UNYOC.
  • Eligibility: The applicant must currently be enrolled in, or working toward, a Masters in Library Science from an accredited college or university in New York State or Ontario.
